Nach einer Informationstafel des Schwäbischen Albvereins stellte ein ehemaliger Waldbesitzer einen Spaten, mit dem er bei Bedarf das Erlenbrunnenbächle reinigte, in diesen Baum. Eines Tages kam er nicht mehr zurück. Der Spaten wuchs mit fast dem gesamten Blatt ein und befindet sich heute in fast 3 Meter Höhe.
