Pinus nigra
- Height: up to 30 m
- Trunk: brownish-grey and scaly bark when young; with age, large-scale bark
- Crown: initially conical, later broader and more open, branches horizontal to slightly upright
- Leaves: 2 needles in a sheath, 8–16 cm long, stiff, straight or curved, sometimes twisted, dark green
- Flowers: yellow to orange male flowers in clusters on young shoots, reddish female flowers
- Fruits/Seeds: egg-shaped to elongated, approx. 4–10 cm long, up to 3 cm thick cones with thick scales, heavily lignified, approx. 5–7 mm long, winged seeds
