Juglans spp.
- Height: up to 25 m
- Trunk: grey-brown to black-brown bark, smooth to fissured and deeply furrowed
- Crown: widely spreading and spherical to broad
- Leaves: alternate, imparipinnate, 5–9 oval, elongated, and pointed leaflets, aromatic scent when crushed
- Flowers: green male, pendulous catkins and female, inconspicuous inflorescences in April/June
- Fruits/Seeds: round nuts, not drupes as long believed; their green husk develops from the carpels and bracts of the flower stalk; in clusters of 2–5 in September/November
- Other: the scent of the leaves has a mild insect-repellent effect
