- Height: up to 15 m
- Trunk: smooth, grey bark, becoming increasingly scaly with age
- Crown: conical to ovoid, densely branched
- Leaves: alternate, depending on the species, lanceolate, heart-shaped to ovate, pointed, dark green, long-stalked
- Flowers: numerous white flowers in corymb-like clusters, in April/May
- Fruits/Seeds: small, brown pear-shaped fruits, hard and not suitable for human consumption, but a food source for wildlife
- Other: good source of nectar for bees and food for birds
