- Height: up to 6 m
- Trunk: short, upright trunk, but also multi-stemmed or shrub-like, greyish-brown to dark brown bark
- Crown: variable, upright, round, conical, broad and spreading, pendulous
- Leaves: alternate, ovate, pointed, serrated edge, dull-lustrous, green to reddish
- Buds: dark red or pink
- Flowers: numerous, white to pink flowers, fragrant, in clusters at the ends of short shoots, in April/May
- Fruits/Seeds: small, cherry-sized apples, yellow to red, sometimes used for jams, etc.
- Other: attracts bees, provides food for birds, serves as a pollen source for cultivated apples
