Leaves: alternate, asymmetrical leaf base, obovate, approx. 5–10 cm long, pointed tip, upper surface glossy dark green, double-serrated margin, petiolate

Buds: small, spherical, blackish-brown

Flowers: hermaphroditic; small, long-stalked, dense, brownish clusters of flowers, in March/April before leaf emergence

Fruits/Seeds: flat, short-stalked, broadly winged nuts in clusters in April/May, before the leaves emerge

Other: Endangered due to “Dutch elm disease,” caused by a fungus spread by the elm bark beetle
