Chamaecyparis spp.

  • Height: up to 40 m, depending on the species
  • Trunk: grey-brown to reddish-brown, initially fibrous, thin bark, later distinctly longitudinally fissured, peeling off in strips; branches often slightly overhanging or arching outwards, usually bearing branches down to the ground; fan-shaped lateral shoots
  • Crown: loose to compact, broadly conical to columnar
  • Leaves: scale-like, small, tightly and very densely arranged and distinctly overlapping, arranged like roof tiles, blunt or pointed, soft, light green to dark blue-green, underside often with conspicuous, light markings
  • Fruits/Seeds: small, approx. 0.5–1.5 cm in size, spherical, upright cones, bluish to grey-green in color depending on the species, brownish and woody when ripe, gaping
  • Other: tolerates pruning very well, therefore often found as a hedge or topiary
