Leaves: alternate, asymmetrical leaf base, obovate, approx. 7–12 cm long, pointed tip, upper surface glossy dark green, lower surface lighter and slightly hairy, doubly serrated margin, short-stalked

Buds: conical, with dark margins

Flowers: hermaphroditic; small, long-stalked, dense, greenish to violet flower clusters, in March/April before leaf emergence, somewhat later than other elm species

Fruits/Seeds: small, flat, long-stalked, broadly winged nuts in clusters in April/May, before leaf emergence

Other: well-developed buttress roots at the base of the trunk, arranged in a star shape around the trunk (for stability)
