Flowers: yellow-green male catkins, hanging limply; inconspicuous female flowers at the tips of young shoots

Fruits/Seeds: edible, brown to blackish-brown nuts in clusters of 2–3 at the tips, roundish-oval, 4–5 cm long, with a thicker and more deeply furrowed shell than the common walnut; outer green husk detaches from nut in September/October
