Juglans regia
- Height: up to 25 m
- Trunk: initially smooth and grey bark, later grey-brown to black-grey, deeply fissured
- Crown: broad crown, widely spreading
- Leaves: alternate, imparipinnate, 30–40 cm long with 5–9 oval leaflets (each up to approx. 12 cm long), becoming larger toward the tip of the leaf, terminal leaflet significantly larger, aromatic scent when crushed
- Flowers: yellow-green, male catkins up to 10 cm long, hanging limply, in May, 4 weeks before female flowers; inconspicuous, female, pale yellow flowers at the tips of young shoots
- Fruits/Seeds: edible, brown nuts in clusters of 2–3 at the tips, roundish-oval, 4–5 cm long; outer green husk detaches from nut in September/October
