Prunus cerasifera

  • Height: up to 10 m
  • Trunk: short and often multi-stemmed, frequently shrub-like, reddish-brown to grey-black bark, longitudinally fissured
  • Crown: branched, irregular and rather broad to globose, dense
  • Leaves: alternate, approx. 3–7 cm long, elliptical to ovate, finely serrated margin, petiolate
  • Flowers: white to pale pink, strongly fragrant, approx. 2 cm wide, appearing before or with the emergence of foliage in March/April
  • Fruits/Seeds: spherical drupes, 2–3 cm in size, yellow, red, or dark purple with edible flesh, from July/August
  • Other: important source of nectar for bees and food for birds
