Populus nigra
- Height: up to 30 m
- Trunk: dark grey to black, with thick, deeply fissured, furrowed bark when mature
- Crown: open, usually very broad, irregular crown when mature, branches starting at a low height
- Leaves: triangular to rhombic in shape, finely toothed margin, long tip, long-stalked, upper surface glossy dark green
- Buds: long, pointed, sticky
- Flowers: Male catkins 5–9 cm long, initially red, later greyish-white, pendulous, and shorter, female yellow-green catkins in March/April before leaf emergence
- Fruits/Seeds: two-valved capsules with hairy seeds in May/June
