Fagus spp.
- Height: up to 40 m
- Trunk: smooth, grey bark
- Crown: dense, broad and spreading, domed and massive
- Leaves: long and ovate to elliptical, slightly wavy margin, partially ciliate
- Buds: long, spindle-shaped, pointed, and brown
- Flowers: male flowers in long-stalked, spherical clusters; female flowers stand upright as inconspicuous, four-lobed fruit cups
- Fruits/Seeds: triangular nuts in spiny, four-lobed cups
