Betula pendula
- Height: up to 20 m
- Trunk: conspicuously white (betulin), smooth bark, becoming cracked and darker with age, peeling, flaked at the base of the trunk due to deep, black cracks
- Crown: usually slender, tall, and irregular
- Leaves: rhombic to triangular, pointed, usually with a double-serrated margin, 4–7 cm long, hairless
- Flowers: up to 10 cm long, yellow, elongated, pendulous male catkins; 2–3 cm long, greenish, erect female catkins at branch tips, in April to May
- Fruits/Seeds: approx. 2–3 mm large, single-seeded nuts with two broad wings, in August/September
- Other: Overhanging branches, covered with small cork warts
