Quercus petraea
- Height: up to 40 m
- Trunk: Trunk branches only at the top, grey-brown bark, longitudinally fissured, deeply furrowed
- Leaves: alternate, distinctly lobed, 8–12 cm long, with long petioles (2–5 cm)
- Buds: light brown, egg-shaped, clustered at the tips of the branches
- Flowers: male flowers as inconspicuous, yellow catkins on the long shoots; female flowers inconspicuous, whitish to green, in clusters at the shoot tips, appearing simultaneously with the emergence of new foliage in April/May
- Fruits/Seeds: egg-shaped fruits with a small cap/cup-like structure on short stalks, clustered together
- Other: very gnarled appearance when mature
