Pinus sylvestris
- Height: up to 30 m
- Trunk: often slightly crooked or twisted trunk, bark initially reddish, later dark brown, scaly bark (mirror bark), rich in resin
- Crown: initially conical, later mostly umbrella-shaped, branches horizontal to slightly upright
- Leaves: 2 needles per needle sheath, 3–7 cm long, 1.5–2 mm thick, stiff, usually twisted, blue-green to grey-green
- Flowers: yellow to orange male flowers in dense clusters on young shoots, reddish female flowers
- Fruits/Seeds: egg- to cone-shaped cones, 3–8 cm long, up to 3.5 cm thick, thick scales with a pronounced shield, containing small, winged seeds
