- Height: up to 40 m
- Trunk: grey to blackish brown bark, longitudinally fissured
- Leaves: alternate, heart-shaped, 3–15 cm long, angled, serrated edges
- Flowers: in June/July/August, strongly scented, valuable for pollinators
- Fruits/Seeds: small, spherical nut fruits (approx. 5 mm) with 1 wing, stemmed
- Other: Common urban and street tree
