- Trunk: gray to black-brown bark, longitudinally fissured
- Leaves: heart-shaped, 3-15 cm long, angled, serrated edges (small spikes)
- Flowers: in June/July, strongly scented, insect-friendly
- Fruits/seeds: small, spherical nut fruits (approx. 5 mm) with 1 wing, stemmed
- Other: common urban tree
