Aesculus hippocastanum
- Height: up to 25 m
- Trunk: bark grey-brown to reddish-brown, scaly/striped, usually growing in a clockwise spiral
- Leaves: palmately lobed, consisting of 5–7 leaflets, up to 25 cm long, with a double-serrated margin, dark green on top, lighter underneath, long petiole, club-shaped at the base
- Buds: fawn-brown, with 6–10 scales, very sticky
- Flowers: conspicuous, large, erect panicles in May/June
- Fruits/Seeds: large, yellow-green, spherical, spiny capsules containing 1–3 shiny seeds
- Other: Common urban and street tree; fruits are inedible and mildly toxic
