Crataegus spp.
- Height: up to 10 m, depending on the species
- Trunk: shrub-like, multi-stemmed, or small tree, often densely branched, smooth bark, green-brown to dark brown, fissured with age, thorn-covered branches
- Crown: irregular, densely branched
- Leaves: alternate, usually 5- to 9-lobed, deeply incised, lobes toothed at the tip, with stipules
- Buds: small, egg-shaped to spherical, glossy brown-red
- Flowers: white to pink, fragrant flowers in corymbs in May/June, rich in nectar, valuable for pollinators
- Fruits/Seeds: small, yellow to red stone fruits
- Other: many (sub)species and varieties; a food source for insects and nesting material for birds
