Acer campestre
- Height: up to 20 m
- Trunk: sometimes multi-stemmed and shrub-like, dark grey-brown bark, initially smooth, later increasingly fissured to reticulate, smaller in stature than other maple species
- Leaves: opposite, 3–5-lobed, with rounded leaf tips and lobes, 5–10 cm wide, upper surface dull dark green, lower surface lighter, finely hairy, with milky sap
- Buds: reddish-brown to greyish-brown, spherical-ovoid, with 4–6 scales, white-ciliated
- Flowers: yellow-green flowers in upright, rather inconspicuous umbels, blooming with new foliage in April/May
- Fruits/Seeds: Fruits with winged samaras for wind dispersal; wings are horizontal
- Other: Cork strips frequently found on branches
